Hourwell — Privacy

Hourwell is an iOS app that helps freelancers in TV and film track their hours, calculate Norwegian collective-agreement supplements, send invoices, and compare rates anonymously. Privacy is built into the design — we collect as little as possible, and store as much as possible locally on your device.
What data Hourwell handles
1. On your device
The following stays on your iPhone and iPad (synced via your own iCloud, never our servers):
- Time entries, projects, clients, invoices, expenses
- User preferences (currency, language, default rate, notification settings)
- Notes, photos attached to entries
- Geofence coordinates for projects (if you enable Smart auto-track)
We have no access to this data. Delete the app and disable iCloud, and it's all gone.
2. Anonymous rate submissions (optional opt-in)
If you explicitly opt in, you can send anonymous rate data to the Community Rates feature. We send:
- Production type (e.g. "Feature film")
- Role and seniority (e.g. "Cinematographer/DOP, 6 years")
- Day rate / hourly rate
- Year of the engagement
- A randomly generated
app_install_id(UUID) used only for rate limiting
We do not send your name, email, phone, project names, client names, or anything that could identify you. Data is hosted by Supabase (EU North region, GDPR-compliant). Aggregated statistics are hidden until at least 3 people have submitted for the same role and seniority (k-anonymity).
3. Permissions the app requests
- Microphone and Speech Recognition: Only when you actively use the "Voice entry" feature to log hours by voice. Audio is processed locally on iOS.
- Location: Only if you enable "Smart auto-track" for a project. Uses Apple's geofence APIs; coordinates never leave your device.
- Notifications: For long-shift reminders (over 10 hours), daily check-ins, and geofence prompts. You can disable these in Settings any time.
- Photos: Only when you actively choose to attach a photo to an entry (e.g. for documentation).
Third parties
- Apple iCloud: We use Apple's CloudKit for syncing between your own devices. Apple's privacy policy applies to that data.
- Supabase: Only for anonymous rate submissions (opt-in). Server in EU North (Stockholm), GDPR-compliant.
We never sell data, we never share data with marketing companies, and we don't track you across apps.
Your rights
Under GDPR you have the right to:
- Access what data Hourwell holds about you (answer: nothing on our servers besides anonymous rate submissions)
- Have data deleted — uninstall the app, or email us if you want your anonymous app_install_id reset
- File a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority if you think we're mishandling data
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we'll notify you in the app. Minor edits (clarifications, corrections) are made directly on this page.
