Peiling: privacy
Last updated: 5 November 2026
Peiling is a compass for iPhone that points to coffee. It is made by Pål Omland Eilevstjønn (DYNNI). Peiling has no account, no server, no analytics and no ads. What you do in the app (saved places, tasting notes and notes) is stored on your phone, and in your iCloud backup if you have that turned on. I never see it.
Your location
The app uses your location while it is open to work out which way the needle should point. The bearing itself is computed on the phone.
To find cafés around you, the app sends an approximate area (coordinates rounded to about one kilometre) to OpenStreetMap's Overpass servers, and the same approximate area to Apple to name the city you are in. Neither learns who you are, and I store nothing.
Ads and tracking
Peiling has no ads and does not track you.
Purchases
If you buy me a coffee, payment goes through the App Store. I do not learn who you are, only that the purchase exists.
Updates
The app fetches updates from Expo (EAS Update). The request contains the app version and platform, nothing about you.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, correct and delete your data. Since I hold no data about you, there is nothing to export or delete on my side: delete the app and everything it stored is gone. You can complain to Datatilsynet if you think data is handled wrongly.
